Mission-Critical Backlog Elimination

Sector Federal / Defense Engagement Type Project-Based Location Corpus Christi, Texas

The Situation

A U.S. Navy installation was operating with a mission-critical work backlog that had grown to the point where it was slowing every function that depended on it. The team was working hard — the problem was not effort or commitment. The problem was that nobody had yet identified which steps in the process actually determined whether the work got done, and which steps were consuming time and attention without moving anything forward.

In an environment where the downstream consequences of delay are real and operational, the cost of that ambiguity was significant.

The Approach

Working side by side with the installation's team, we mapped the full workflow and identified the true critical path — the sequence of steps that everything else depended on. From there, we restructured priorities around protecting those steps, cleared the work that was consuming capacity without producing progress, and built a cadence that made the critical path visible and defensible on an ongoing basis.

The work itself wasn't dramatic. It was disciplined — the same focused attention on the right things, in the right sequence, until the system could function the way it was designed to.

The Result

Primary Outcome 65% backlog reduction

Achieved in short order, in a mission-critical environment, without additional headcount or resources — through clarity about what actually had to happen, and in what sequence.

Reducing Time to Recommendation in a Top Secret Environment

Sector Defense Intelligence Engagement Type Senior Advisory Location Washington, D.C.

The Situation

A large Washington D.C. intelligence agency was operating under a fundamental information problem — not a shortage of data, but an inability to move from data to decision at the speed the mission demanded. Analysts were working from printed intelligence reports stacked three inches thick. The information was accurate. The format made it nearly impossible to synthesize quickly, which meant the time between receiving intelligence and issuing a recommendation was far longer than the operational environment could afford.

In a top secret environment where the downstream consequences of delayed analysis are real and operational, the cost of that inefficiency was significant.

The Approach

The work centered on a deceptively simple insight: the right data visualization, applied to the right information at the right point in the analytical process, could collapse the cognitive load that was slowing analysts down. Rather than asking people to read through dense printed reports and construct a mental picture of a complex situation, we designed visual formats that made the critical patterns immediately apparent.

The engagement required deep familiarity with how intelligence analysts actually worked — what they needed to see, in what sequence, and under what conditions — before a single visualization was designed. The constraints of a top secret environment added layers of complexity that commercial data visualization work rarely encounters.

The Result

Primary Outcome Up to 80% reduction in time to recommendation

By replacing a three-inch printed stack of intelligence reports with purpose-designed data visualizations, analysts could move from raw intelligence to actionable recommendation dramatically faster — in an environment where that speed had direct operational consequences.

03 UX · Business Intelligence

Trading Floor Business Intelligence

Sector Financial Services Engagement Type Project-Based Organization Chicago Board of Trade

The Situation

The Chicago Board of Trade — one of the world's oldest and most active futures and options exchanges — needed to develop business intelligence and analytics capabilities that could operate at the speed and complexity of a live trading environment. The challenge was not a shortage of data. Trading floors generate enormous volumes of it. The challenge was turning that data into something decision-makers could act on, in real time, without slowing the operation down.

The environment demanded both analytical rigor and a deep understanding of how people actually work under pressure — what they need to see, how quickly, and in what form.

The Approach

We led the design and development of a business intelligence and analytics system built around how trading floor decision-makers actually operated — not how a software specification assumed they did. That required extensive UX research alongside the technical build, mapping the real decision workflows before designing the information architecture that would support them.

The result was a system that surfaced the right information at the right moment, in a form that required minimal interpretation under high-pressure conditions.

The Result

Primary Outcome Real-time intelligence at trading floor speed

A business intelligence system designed around actual decision-making workflows — delivering actionable data at the pace and complexity the Chicago Board of Trade's operations required.

04 Strategy · Knowledge Management

Pentagon Y2K Threat Assessment and Knowledge Management

Sector Defense / Federal Engagement Type Senior Advisory Location Washington, D.C.

The Situation

As the year 2000 approached, the Pentagon faced a strategic challenge that went well beyond the technical question of software compatibility. The Y2K threat raised fundamental questions about which systems were actually mission-critical, what the cascading failure risks looked like across interconnected defense infrastructure, and whether the knowledge management practices in place were adequate to coordinate a response at the scale and speed the situation might demand.

In a top secret environment, with operational readiness on the line, the margin for ambiguity was zero.

The Approach

The engagement centered on two interconnected problems: assessing the Y2K threat landscape across defense systems with the rigor the environment required, and ensuring the knowledge management practices and software infrastructure were in place to coordinate an effective response if systems were compromised.

This required working across organizational boundaries within the Pentagon — navigating the structural complexity of a large defense institution while maintaining the security protocols and operational discipline that classified work demands. The goal was not just threat identification but actionable preparedness: clear protocols, the right tools, and the organizational knowledge to execute under pressure.

The Result

Primary Outcome Mission-ready Y2K preparedness across defense systems

A comprehensive threat assessment and knowledge management framework delivered in a top secret environment — giving Pentagon leadership the clarity and the operational infrastructure to navigate the Y2K transition without mission disruption.
